We all want a nice lawn and landscape for our homes. With everyone talking about water conservation and going "green," how do you accomplish both? Clear Water PSI thinks some knowledge and just a bit of commitment is the best answer.

Media ads like "Think Two" are getting the word out to Central Florida: don't water MORE THAN two times each week. Many property owners find themselves unable to follow this rule especially during the hot summer days.

If your lawn is suffering at any time of year you probably could use answers to a few more questions in order to solve the problem. Clear Water PSI can help.

Since 1997 it has been our mission to assist clients with the right tools and information to have a lush look with less water and maintenance. We do this by renovating an existing system or engineering a sprinkler system design based on the relationship between plants and their water requirements.

Sprinkler Basics

Most sprinkler systems run at night or early in the morning, using thousands of gallons of water, sometimes needlessly. Research proves 50 to 70% of an average household's water purchase is used outdoors.

Can you answer these questions?

  • What type of water is used for your sprinkler system?
  • Does your timer use a battery?
  • How do you test a rain sensor?
  • How many zones/sections are in your yard?
  • Do plants and turf get watered separately?
  • How much water is used when a sprinkler system operates a full cycle?
  • How much water each minute is wasted by a broken sprinkler head?

Reading Your Yard

When is the best time to water? If you answered "in the early morning hours" you MAY be right. Actually your lawn will tell you when it is the best time, if you know what to look for you can improve growth patterns, saving your time and money.

Landscape plants and turf require different amounts of water and sometimes a different frequency of water. Setting your timer with the same water schedule for the entire year prevents your yard from reaching its true potential. Understanding your unique environment will reduce water use and create a healthier lawn and landscape. Who knows, you may even be the envy of the neighborhood.

Water Saving Tips

  • Have a professional landscape and irrigation evaluation annually to identify problems with sprinkler coverage or plant health issues.
  • After installing new plants or sod, program the timer to increase the watering frequency only for the newly planted area, not the entire property.
  • Ask about the four step schedule and save 80% of the water normally used while giving new sod a healthier start.
  • Make certain rotors and spray heads are on separate zones. If they aren't, change the nozzle in the spray head to a rotary nozzle. They are easy to install, improve the water application while using less water.
  • Maintain your system. Many repairs are fairly simple tasks with the right advice. Others may require professional services.
